Professor Johannes Bischko
Professor Johannes Bischko, the founder, longstanding president and honorary president of the Austrian Association for Acupuncture, Head of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Acupuncture, and holder of numerous national and international awards died on Friday, November 5th 2004, after a long illness which he bore with great patience. Professor Bischko personified acupuncture. Very early on, he recognised that certain phenomena occur in medicine, which initially could not be explained by conventional, medical knowledge. So, alongside his work as a surgeon, he began to study the phenomenon of acupuncture. He did not approach the subject in the usual way, that is by way of the philosophical background. He was far more interested in the ‘why’ and ‘wherefore’. He became an important co-founder of scientific acupuncture. From the beginning he was convinced that the effect of acupuncture can be researched and learned by using conventional medical methods. He succeeded in leading acupuncture away from alternative medicine and to integrate it, as an equal partner, in present day conventional medicine. Next to all his scientific achievements and contributions to the recognition of acupuncture, this fascinating person was able to convey energy, joy, zest for life, as well as knowledge and understanding in a very special way. He always found time to listen, help and mediate. He lived like a candle burning at both ends (as described in TCM). Bischko has left a large life work. We are called upon to continue it in the way he would have wanted. We shall never
